Description

The Coorong is one of the most inspirational landscapes in my home state of South Australia. It is a favourite are of mine to visit.  Some years ago, I also worked in the area, becoming familiar with its unique beauty.

The area’s wetlands provide habitat and breeding grounds for many local species, including pelicans, as well as for migratory wading birds – many flying in from as far away as Alaska. Consequently, the Coorong is a wetland of international importance.

The Coorong is of enormous cultural significance to the Ngarrindjeri people, with ancient mounds of discarded shells revealing archaeological evidence of Aboriginal campsites over thousands of years. ‘Kurangk’ (meaning ‘long narrow neck’) is the name given to the area by the Ngarrindjeri people. Ngarrindjeri involvement in cultural heritage is linked with current management of the park.
