Description

One of the delights of living in Adelaide is it’s closeness to the surrounding countryside, which is a constant source of inspiration to me.

Willunga, on the The Fleurieu is the traditional home of almonds in South Australia.

In the 1960s was Australia’s largest almond-producing district, and despite producing excellent quality almonds, 80% of the region’s farmers uprooted almond trees in the mid-1990s to make way for grape vines, to cash in on the wine-grape boom sweeping McLaren Vale.

However, due a world shortage of almonds, a subsequent price surge, and an oversupply of wine grapes, many are looking to replace their vines with almonds.

A grove of almond trees in full blossom is a stunning sight , and for 50 years Willunga has held an almond blossom festival each July.
